The difference between Shame and Guilt cultures (Thought for the Day) - Rabbi Sacks

Another cracking "Thought for the Day" from Rabbi Sacks on Radio 4 Today programme this morning.

The difference between Shame and Guilt cultures (Thought for the Day) - Rabbi Sacks

"In shame cultures, if you've done wrong, the first rule is, don’t be found out. If you are, then bluff your way through" whereas "guilt cultures focus on atonement and repentance, apology and forgiveness"

"We need to make it easier for people to be honest and apologise, which means that we too must learn how to forgive."

I wonder which culture my children's Roman Catholic school falls under.  You would tend to think Roman Catholic = Guilt.

Well, a year after being treated appallingly by the head teacher, we have received no apology for her actions, no explanation for them either, no formal adherence to a complaints procedure, no credible / independent investigation of our complaint (by the governing body or the diocese - we are awaiting a response from DfE).  But we have had lies, intimidation, falsification of official documents and fraudulent re-creation / doctoring of official records - by the head teacher, and an attempted imposition of a communication policy preventing direct communication with the school (see http://bouncermangel.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/school-complaints-catholic-cover-up.html).

This demonstrates to me that a shame culture reigns supreme with the Headteacher of the School, the head governor - a priest, and the Catholic Diocese - let's batten down the hatches, lie, cheat, front-it out, cover-up the wrong doings rather than admit we were wrong and seek forgiveness of the parents.

But what should I expect given the track record of cover-ups in  of the RC church?
